Velvet Surgery

16 June 2008

People considering cosmetic surgery such as a facelift may have been unwilling to put themselves through the swelling and recovery time involved.  Now cosmetic surgeon Christian Ferlaud is specialising in Velvet Surgery, a new ‘soft surgery’ carried out under local anaesthetic, achieving results with the benefit of minimal swelling and bruising.

The Velvet Face Lift is quicker and less traumatic than regular surgery carried out under general anaesthetic. There is no visible scarring, and less risk of complication.

Laser and endoscopic techniques are used to achieve a more natural, younger look. Rather than making a large incision with a scalpel, several small incisions are made using a laser around the edge of the eye, by the ears and above the temple in the hair line. Dr. Ferlaud then uses endoscopic techniques to reposition the muscles.

The patient is awake and can play an active part in the surgery, sitting up, opening and closing the eyes, and moving the cheeks. When the patient is lying down, gravity affects the face, whilst sitting up gives the surgeon a better idea of the final result and he can make minor adjustments while the patient checks in the mirror. The patient then remains under observation for a few hours before being allowed to go home. Although there is minimal swelling and bruising, some recovery time is required after the surgery.

New Velvet Surgery Face Lift promises to take years off the face giving a more youthful look that will last for several years, if the patient has a healthy lifestyle.

The procedure is less expensive than regular surgery, starting from £4,000, as it requires no hospitalisation or anaesthetist service.

Christian Ferlaud is at Skin Health Spa. See also our A-Z guide to cosmetic surgery.
