Pucker up with PermaLipTM
04 August 2007
Pucker up with PermaLipTM One of the great challenges to plastic and cosmetic surgeons worldwide has been the elusive search for the exceptional solution to lip enhancement. Over the years, attempts to find the answer to this problem have been plagued with transitory successes and early or late failures.
Lip enhancement techniques may be separated into two kinds: temporary and permanent.
Temporary techniques involve the use of fillers that may only last a few months. These procedures are painful and must be repeated over and over again, whilst permanent techniques involve the use of implants. Results are often disappointing due to potential complications such as excessive scar tissue formation, creating a restricted, unnatural smile.
PermaLipTM
As a result of the numerous pitfalls associated with existing lip enhancement techniques, extensive research has led to the creation and development of PermaLipTM. The revolutionary, patented PermaLipTM implant was first invented in 2002, and is made from a very soft silicone elastomer made in a shape corresponding to the dimensions of the lip.Permalip™, manufactured by US based company Surgisil and distributed in the UK by Eurosurgical Ltd, is a solid, smooth surface that tapers at both ends to conform naturally to the normal lip.
The PermaLipTM implant is available in a variety of diameters and lengths to accommodate the uniqueness of each persons lip characteristics. The PermaLipTM implant has undergone extensive clinical testing, has CE Marking in Europe, and is in a multicenter clinical trial for FDA clearance in the United States.
The procedure, costing £2 - £3,000, takes approximately 15 minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic. The implants are inserted via two small, 4mm incisions at the corner of the mouth on the upper and low lips. The implant is then passed through a tunnel created in the lip and centred; the incisions are then stitched closed with absorbable sutures.
Dr Ash Dutta, Cosmetic Doctor and owner of the Aesthetic Beauty Centre, who has been performing Permalip™ procedures in his clinic since February this year highlighted the fact that patients should expect their lips to swell post-operatively quite disproportionately to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, which may be quite a shock, with swelling lasting for 3 – 4 days and bruising for 7 – 8 days.Lips will still be sensitive to pressure for about 2 weeks. However, he noted that once the lips have settled, “the results are phenomenal”.
Since its launch at the start of the year there are now over 15 practitioners offering this procedure Nationwide
