Treatment in Focus – Microdermabrasion
14 March 2007
The Body Guide aims to inform you about different treatments available that may be relevant to your mind, body or spirit needs. Here the Treatment in Focus is Microdermabrasion.
This Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a progressive and controlled method of skin exfoliation. It is non-aggressive since the result is normally achieved over 6-10 treatments but even after one session the effect can be similar to 3x30% glycolic peels and a single 70% peel and, of course, this is without the chemical irritation that can be associated with peels of this nature.
MDA allows therapists to perform superficial peeling of the stratum corneum, First the system blasts the skin with a controlled stream of crushed aluminium oxide crystals. These are pumped through a hand piece held directly on the skin. Together the speed and abrasive nature of the crystals delicately remove old skin cells layer by layer. Used crystals and dead skin cells are then drawn away by a vacuum action. Exfoliation depth in a ‘level 2’ treatment, for example, is about 12-25 microns, producing a very mild, short lived erythema. This action allows for the controlled exfoliation of the stratum corneum and the correction of surface irregularities resulting in a smoother and fresher skin condition.
The vacuum action also assists in the stimulation of the microcirculation. Hyperaemia can be observed as the superficial skin is cleaned. By encouraging hyperaemia we are improving the microcirculation (increasing the blood supply) thus providing the nutrients necessary for the stimulation of fibroblasts for collagen regeneration i.e. increased blood supply to the dermis and the epidermal layers.
Benefits of Crystal Clear MDA
With the Crystal Clear system, the degree of abrasion can be controlled so that the therapist can take control of the exfoliation process, eliminating the guesswork that is often associated with AHA or chemical peels. The entire face and neck can be treated in a single session with particular attention paid to the client’s areas of concern. Most importantly, the treatment does not impinge on the clients lifestyle or daily routine.
